Brewery Integrates Energy Efficiency and Architectural Style With Kessel Construction

by Administrator 22. July 2011 18:30

Kessel Construction and Southern Tier Brewing CompanyLAKEWOOD, NY--(Marketwire - 07/21/11) - When demand for Southern Tier Brewing Company's award-winning beer started to take off, owners Phineas and Sara DeMink selected Kessel Construction, one of the region's most respected design/build firms specializing in turnkey construction of commercial and industrial buildings, to construct the brewery's new facility.

After the decision was made to move forward with the new building, Kessel was the top choice. "They've been around for awhile, and they are great guys," Phineas said. "Simply put, we trust them, we like them, and they do nice work."

Designed with the express purpose of brewing innovative, high-quality beer for an expanding customer base, the new 19,250-square-foot facility was engineered to effectively serve as a showpiece, both in the bar and manufacturing areas where tours are regularly given.

From the building aspect, Butler Manufacturing's patented CMR-24® roof system was utilized to ensure a consistent weather-tight performance under demanding conditions. The CMR-24 accommodates the natural expansion and contraction that comes with daily and seasonal temperature changes and includes a layer of rigid insulation board and an interior steel liner. This liner gives the interior a finished look while protecting the roof's insulation and providing excellent energy savings.

The CMR-24 was combined with Kessel's interior composite wall to achieve a clean roof and wall combination and create a finished look inside and out. In addition to aesthetics, Kessel's composite wall was an excellent choice for durability, thermal performance, and ease of cleaning.

Butler's Shadowall™ system was selected for the exterior walls to create an architecturally pleasing appearance coupled with exceptional energy efficiency. Because the fasteners are recessed deep in the corrugation, the Shadowall system gives walls an attractive and uniform appearance.

Special attention was taken to ensure the components selected worked hand-in-hand with the unique interior design scheme, particularly in the pub area, which features distinctive woodwork, a vaulted ceiling, and hardware-free, peg-style craftsmanship.

"The guys at Kessel found smarter ways to do things," Phineas said. "For example, we took advantage of cost segregation," he said. A method utilized to improve cash flow and maximize tax deductions, cost segregation was suggested and employed with the new building and has proved to be a beneficial cost-saving measure.

A testament to the facility's quality and craftsmanship, Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) recognized the Southern Tier Brewing Company with an ABC Award of Excellence as part of the premier competition within the construction industry honoring outstanding construction projects across the nation.

In addition, just two years after the new facility was built, the Kessel team was contacted to construct another expansion to the brewery, which is currently underway and will add 50% to the size of the facility!

Kessel Builds Sound-proof Modular Gas Compressor Building

by Administrator 24. June 2011 00:07

Southwest Energy Gas Compressor StationWYALUSING, Pa.— Kessel Construction, Inc. , a leader in design/build industry specializing in oil and gas services for the Marcellus Shale market, custom-fabricated and built a natural gas compressor building for Houston-based Southwestern Energy’s Wyalusing location.

With natural gas exploration, production, and transmission on the rise, Kessel brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table to support this growing industry. Before selecting Kessel, Southwestern officials completed their due diligence by asking several other gas company executives for their recommendations. When the Kessel name came up time and again, Southwestern awarded Kessel this unique project.

“We asked for recommendations and others were impressed with Kessel’s work,” said Stew Burrous of Southwestern. “Kessel was excellent to work with and the team was very helpful with the building design. They understood what we needed and were great in making it happen. In fact, we are using them right now for another project!”

Kessel designed and fabricated the 6,000-square-foot building in-house and then constructed the structure around the compressor on-site. Because the facility runs 24/7, sound control was one of the most important aspects of this project. Kessel’s solution consisted of a foundation floor and a layered wall prepared with four inches of fiberglass and four inches of mineral wool capped with 24-gauge perforated panels.

The building utilizes heavy gauge tubular steel for the primary structural system and industry standard, ribbed metal wall panels with 20-year warranted finish and ribbed metal roof panels with 20-year “Galvalume” coating. These materials offer cost-effective construction and low maintenance.

Another key feature of the building is the capability to easily remove the roof panels and structural system to allow full access to the inside of the building and the compressor unit. This is an important feature when replacing or performing maintenance on the units.

Kessel Receives 2008 Excellence in Construction Award

Kessel Construction received the 2008 Excellence in Construction Award for the second phase of the new Harley Davidson dealership. The $2.9 million dual-phase commercial structure project included an 11,840 square foot service building and 24,000 square foot showroom.

Phase I was the construction of the 80’ x 148’ Service and Warehouse Building in 2006. In late fall of 2007, Kessel started construction of the two-story showroom and retail sales building. Both buildings are Butler Manufacturing Company structure. The service building features the MR-24 standing roof system with a Composite Wall System developed by Kessel.

he showroom is a Butler Hybrid utilizing a conventional steel structure fabricated by Butler, including Butler’s first 12” galvanized “Z” long span purlin roof structurals with the CMR-24 Roof System on the back side of the building and a CVCR roof system on the “curbside” of the building.

Another special feature of the project was the floor treatment. The requirement for a floor treatment that was easy to maintain, non-slip and would not stain or mare from having tires and kick stands on it, lead to the use of a polished concrete. After the floor had cured it was diamond ground to a reflective finish. A coloring agent (black and orange) with a chemical hardener was applied and then polished to a 1600 mirror-like finish.
